Progress Towards Sustainable and Cost-Effective Production: MOL Group Chemicals Builds a New Solar Park

MOL Group Chemicals is committed to achieving sustainable energy supply and therefore places particular emphasis on the use of renewable energy sources. On November 14th, the company announced that it is expanding its green electricity production in Tiszaújváros with a new 48 MWp solar power plant, one of the largest directly connected to an industrial consumer in Hungary.

Why is this important for Partners?

  • Cost Reduction: By producing its own green energy, the company can reduce its electricity costs, which directly contributes to increasing the efficiency of manufacturing processes and strengthening the competitiveness of its products.
  • More Sustainable Production: The 48 MWp power plant covers an average of 5% of the Tiszaújváros manufacturing unit's annual electricity demand, which can reach up to 30% during peak periods. The solar park reduces the site's CO2 emissions by 17,000 tons per year, enabling Partners to actively participate in achieving environmental goals.
  • Energy Independence: The power plant produces the same amount of electricity as the annual consumption of 28,000 average local households. The own energy source increases the independence of the plants' energy supply.

"The current market environment: persistently high energy prices, the CO2 tax, sustainability regulations imposed by the European Union, and low demand in the polymer market pose significant challenges for petrochemical companies. At MOL, we are thinking about solutions. The new solar park at our Tiszaújváros plants will be another step towards the green transition, supporting our competitiveness and adaptation to a challenging environment," said Péter Császár, Executive Director of MOL Group Chemicals.

The solar park is being built on the former sludge storage area of the company's Tiszaújváros site, thus transforming a previously unused area into a valuable energy source. The generated electricity will be used directly by the manufacturing plants, which minimizes energy losses.

The new solar park is an important milestone in our company's sustainability efforts. The investment not only serves environmental goals but also provides long-term economic benefits for Partners.
